Porto Seguro, is one of the most lively touristic regions of Brazil, located in the South of Bahia.

Its well preserved historical architecture at “cidade alta”, reveals how the city was in the time of the first port in Colonial Brazil.

There are attractions for all kinds of tastes: half-desert or agitated beaches, full of tents that offer meals, shows of music and dance, unforgetable night spectacles, equipment rent for diving, kayaks, panoramic flights, ecology and photographic adventures, safari in the Atlantic forest, horse trekking, swimming in natural pools, strolls of boat discovering paradisiacal places. All this will certainly make your vacation unforgetable.

History:

Porto Seguro was originally called, Vila de Nossa Senhora da Pena and was established in 1535, in the estuary of the river Buranhém, then it became the headquarters of the Captainship of Porto Seguro.

Following the Portuguese tradition, the village was divided in high city and low city. In the first one, there were the public and religious administration and the richest inhabitants. In the second one, there were the fishing activity and trade market.

Its architectural patrimony is composed by old churches, public buildings and houses, spread all over the streets.







Curiosities:

In 1968 the architectural joint of the high city was aknowledged by IPHAN (Institute of the National Artistic and Historic Patrimony).

In 1973 the city was raised national monument.

In 1999, the territory called Museu Aberto do Descobrimento, which includes Port Seguro, was promoted by UNESCO to the category of Natural Patrimony of the Humanity.

The description of the coast by Pero Vaz de Caminha in 1500 nowadays still remains with a few alterations. Constituting of the most beautiful e important Brazilian littoral landscapes. That because it joins natural and the cultural wealth, and the area represents the cradle of a new nation, shaped by the meeting of distint people.

This territory, known today as Museu Aberto do Descobrimento (Open Museum of the Discovery), understands the stretch covered by the squadron of Pedro Álvares Cabral, since the sight of Mount Pascoal and the first contact with the natives, probably in the Barra do Caí river, until the arrival in Cabrália Bahia, next to the River João to Tiba.
